Iconic “alternative” power trio Dinosaur Jr. will perform the group’s classic “Bug” album in its entirety on a bill with special guest Henry Rollins (spoken word), Thurston Moore (of Sonic Youth), and Amherst based garage band the Warblers on Tuesday, June 21st at the Calvin Theater in Northampton at 6:30. Proceeds benefit Whole Children, a non-profit center in Hadley, Mass., which provides recreation programs for children with special needs.
Dinosaur Jr. was formed in Amherst, Mass. in 1984. Bug was their celebrated third album, released in 1988 on SST Records. After bassist Lou Barlow and drummer Murph left the group, guitarist J Mascis retired the band name following 1997’s Hand It Over. The band reunited in 2005 and have since put out 2007’s Beyond and 2009’s Farm.
It so happens that the very day tickets go on sale for Dinosaur Jr.’s show, Lou Barlow and his band Sebadoh are in town. This Friday, April 8th at 9PM Sebadoh (featuring Lou Barlow, Jason Loewenstein, & Bob D'Amico) make a stop at Pearl Street in Northampton on their Remembering Time tour along with singer/songwriter Richard Buckner and local pop combo Paper Piano. Sebadoh’s seminal albums Bakesale and Harmacy are being reissued in deluxe versions on the Sub Pop label.
