<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Yes </b><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">kicked off a new North American tour leg on Saturday with a show in Paso Robles, California. As they did on their previous few treks, the band is performing three of their classic 1970s albums — 1971′s The Yes Album, 1972′s Close to the Edge and 1977′s Going for the One — in their entirety at most shows on their current outing.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Guitarist Steve Howe says he and his band mates have really embraced playing these full albums live. Basically, we’re loving it,” he tells ABC News Radio. “To me, it will pale again if we ever go back and just do a set or sets that are just songs from albums. That will seem, somehow, a little bit hard to get used to again.”</span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Howe compares performing each album to being on “a long motorway drive,” noting that when “you get to the end…you have a sense of celebration that you’re at the end of this journey, and those records are a journey.”</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">He adds that The Yes Album, Close to the Edge and Going for the One “were done at a time when Yes were, without any doubt, an album band, so what better things to play now than an album.”</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Looking ahead to Yes’ future tour plans, Steve reveals that the band is considering working up other full albums to play live, although nothing is set in stone. He says when he’s chatted with fans about the records they’d like to see the group perform, among the most requested are Fragile, Drama and Relayer.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“We have a lot of fun teasing the audience in their minds [about which albums we might play] but maybe this is the way we’re going,” Howe suggests. “But it’s not necessarily so. We have other ideas for next year [too].”</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Yes’ tour continues Monday night in Phoenix, and the trek is mapped out through an August 12 concert in Indianapolis. Among the upcoming highlights of the summer outing will be the inaugural Yestival, scheduled for August 3 in Camden, New Jersey. In addition to a headlining set by Yes, the daylong progressive rock fest will include performances by Renaissance, Carl Palmer’s ELP Legacy and the acclaimed Genesistribute act The Musical Box, as well as an appearance by famous Yes album-cover artist Roger Dean</span>.</div>

Blues legend Buddy Guy is at the top of the blues food chain, serving as an all-important link between the breathless old and the electric new. Still amazing well into his 70s, Guy continues to make exciting, visceral music. With his new album, Living Proof, Buddy Guy takes a hard look back at a remarkable life. At age 74, he’s a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, a major influence on rock titans like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, a pioneer of Chicago’s fabled West Side sound, and a living link to that city’s halcyon days of electric blues. He has received 5 Grammy Awards, 23 W.C. Handy Blues Awards (the most any artist has received), the Billboard magazine Century Award for distinguished artistic achievement, and the Presidential National Medal of Arts. Rolling Stone ranked him in the top 30 of its "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time."</div>

Jazz & blues vocalist Samirah Evans first performed at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in 1990 and became a fixture for fourteen consecutive years. She has toured Europe, Asia, and both Americas as a headliner, and shared stages with B.B. King and James Brown, to New Orleans own Queen of Soul, Irma Thomas. Samirah’s connection to the jazz lineage and her message of love and excitement radiates from her entire band which will include W. Mass. jazz pianist Miro Sprague for this show. As a teenager, Miro won a number of awards, including being honored in the 2002, 2003, and 2004 Downbeat magazine’s national student music awards with prizes for composition and performance. He also won awards at many jazz festivals, including the Berklee Jazz Festival, where his trio took a 1st prize and he received an outstanding musician award two years in a row.</div>

All four singers in The Blues Broads are headliners in their own right. These superstars of the seminal era of the genre do what they do best – blow the house away with soulful, irreverent, throaty Blues sung from the bottom of their hearts. DOROTHY MORRISON, is the singer and co-author of the classic “Oh Happy Day”, recorded with The Edwin Hawkins Singers. TRACY NELSON, founder of the legendary group Mother Earth. ANGELA STREHLI is the organizer of The Blues Broads and one of the driving forces behind the historic Rancho Nicasio in Marin County, where the group fisrt performed. ANNIE SAMPSON, former longtime cast member of “Hair” and the groundbreaking group Stoneground, brings deeply soulful roots to the table. In this star-studded show, each artist gives the audience a taste of their individual specialty, and then combine voices in ways that make The Blues Broads far more than the sum of its parts. They are backed by some of some of the best musicians in the business,<br />

Breaking every cliché associated with the blues while producing some of the most powerful music of the 21st century comes as natural to Albert Cummings as swinging a hammer while constructing one of his award-winning custom built homes. He has taken tradition and built his own musical edifice that expresses his thoughts and dreams. It is a vision that alternately excites and soothes while also clearly providing a glimpse of his unlimited future. The best is yet to come.<br />

Carolyn Wonderland is a multi-award winning blues artist from Texas. She and her band were named Austin's Best Blues Band at the 2009 Austin Music Awards where Carolyn picked up the award for Best Female Vocalist, too! A triple threat with diverse songwriting, soulful vocals, and blues guitar goddess status, Wonderland has toured with Buddy Guy and Johnny Winter and sat in with String Cheese Incident, and Los Lobos. Carolyn also whistles, scat sings, plays trumpet, accordion, mandolin, and keys. “Stated plainly, Wonderland has one of the most impressively powerful voices recently heard anywhere, regardless of sex. Able to boon, cajole, promise growl, and wheedle with equal power, she plays guitar with much the same forcefulness.” --Matt Weitz, Dallas Observer<br />

When blues legend James Montgomery plays the harmonica, he "brings it on home". Whether it's recording with Kid Rock, sitting in with Gregg Allman, or fronting his hot band of thirty years, Montgomery plays with authority. While growing up in Detroit he learned first-hand from the masters - James Cotton, John Lee Hooker, and Jr. Wells - at the legendary "Chessmate." Over the years, he's carried on in the tradition and continues to be a vital presence in Blues as one of the most dynamic performers on the scene.<br />

Known for his use of the Fender Telecaster, signature Ernie Ball guitar and lightning speed playing, Albert has not only worked in the studio and on tour with some of the biggest names in world music, but he has also maintained a successful solo career of his own. Recently Albert began working in the studio and subsequently toured with Bill Wyman. In 2002 he appeared on stage at the 'Concert for George' to celebrate the life and music of George Harrison. The same year, Albert received a Grammy for his work on Brad Paisley's 'Cluster Pluck'. He also received nominations for tracks on three other solo CDs of his own. <strong>Billy Cox,</strong> the bassist who worked with <strong>Jimi Hendrix</strong> in concert and in the studio as part of both the <strong>Band of Gypsys</strong> and the<strong> Jimi Hendrix Experience</strong>,
kicks off a US tour at the Iron Horse in Northampton on Wednesday, June
19th with his own band. In addition to Hendrix classics such as <em><strong>"Machine Gun"</strong></em> and "<em><strong>Voodoo Child (Slight Return</strong></em>)"
Cox will also showcase his impressive blues roots--drawing upon the
trove of performances and recording sessions he made with such legends
as <strong>Slim Harpo, Little Milton, Gatemouth Brown </strong>and <strong>Freddie King.</strong><br /><br />Joining Cox will be two exciting guitarists he personally picked for these special performances. <em>"It
was Jimi's dream to use a second guitarist. He was getting into a new
phase of his music and he felt that one guitar limited the band and
limited the new music that he was creating,” </em>explains Cox <em>“There
were glimpses of what he was trying to do at Woodstock with Larry Lee
as the second guitarist. But that idea was not able to continue. Now
almost 43 years later, I am grateful that I have the opportunity to
continue the dream with two dynamic guitarists,<strong> Dani Robinson</strong> and<strong> Byron Bordeaux.” </strong></em><br /><div style="text-align: center;">

Cox
is, of course, the stellar bassist who first joined forces with Jimi
Hendrix when they chanced to meet while serving in the US Army more than
50 years ago. After they were discharged, Hendrix and Cox moved to
Nashville and played the southern ‘chitlin circuit’ backing up big names
of the era including<strong> Sam Cooke</strong> and <strong>Jackie Wilson</strong> and with their own band, <strong>The King Kasuals. </strong>They lost touch with each other after Hendrix was ‘discovered’ by<strong> Animals bassist Chas Chandler </strong>who brought Jimi Hendrix to England where the <strong>Jimi Hendrix Experience </strong>was founded in London In October of 1966.<br /><br />When <strong>Noel Redding</strong> departed the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Hendrix sought and found his old buddy and thereafter formed <strong>Gypsy Sun & Rainbows, </strong>the expanded ensemble that Hendrix featured at the<strong> Woodstock</strong> festival and then the <strong>Band of Gypsys</strong> with drummer <strong>Buddy Miles. </strong>Following that, Cox and Hendrix remained together in the re-envisioned version of the<strong> Jimi Hendrix Experience</strong> that headlined major pop music festivals as the<strong> Isle Of Wight</strong> and continued to tour until Jimi’s untimely death. Cox’s most recent studio album <strong><em>Old School Blue Blues</em></strong>
has been a critical success since its release October of 2011. Billy
Cox is also featured as a musician on the current Jimi Hendrix release <strong><em>People, Hell & Angels, </em></strong>which debuted at #<strong>2 on the Billboard Charts</strong> earlier this year.<br /><br /><em>“Our
show could be described as triangular in context, we perform not only
Hendrix, but some originals and some old school,” says Cox describing
his forthcoming tour dates “We are most especially committed to giving
the audience an evening of good listening and fun. Dani and Byron
embody the spirit of guitar showmanship."</em><br /><br /><b>Tickets are $20 at Northampton Box Office, 76 Main Street, 413 586 8686 and online at</b><a data-cke-saved-href="http://iheg.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1d5bdea27fe9bba39adff43c2&id=1f874120a7&e=5cb9032c08" href="http://iheg.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1d5bdea27fe9bba39adff43c2&id=1f874120a7&e=5cb9032c08" style="color: #336699; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"> IHEG.com.</a><div style="text-align: center;">

tour (where he mostly premiered new material for his uncompleted fourth
album). However this trio still referred to themselves as <strong><span class="bbcode_artist">The Jimi Hendrix Experience</span></strong>. It consisted of the Experience’s <strong>Mitch Mitchell</strong> and Jimi’s old army friend<strong> Billy Cox</strong> (who also joined him in late ‘69’s brief <strong><span class="bbcode_artist">Band of Gypsys</span> </strong>project, this time with <strong>Buddy Miles</strong> on drums)</span>.</div>

<b>Aoife O'Donovan (Click Image for High Res)</b></div>
<br />
<b>Aoife O’Donovan</b> is “a vocalist of unerring instinct”
according to the New York Times, Aoife is one of the most sought after
singers in the roots music field. Her work as the lead singer and
co-founder of stringband <b>Crooked Still </b>put her on the
map in 2001, and she has collaborated with a variety of musicians across
genres since. Aoife’s crystalline voice can be heard on the Grammy
Award winning album <i><b>The Goat Rodeo Sessions</b></i>, alongside icons such as<b> Yo Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, Stuart Duncan, </b>and<b> Chris Thile. </b>She’s also appeared as a guest vocalist with folks such as<b> Ollabelle, Dave Douglas, Solas, Noam Pikelny, Joshua Radin, </b>and <b>Kate Rusby, </b>among others. Fans of <b>Alison Krauss</b> may be familiar with Aoife’s unique songwriting–Krauss recorded Aoife’s song <i>“Lay My Burden Down</i>” on her 2011 album <i><b>Paper Airplane</b></i>. <b>David Ford (Click Image for High Res)</b></div>
<br />
As the former frontman of <b>Easyworld</b>, a British indie rock outfit that disbanded in 2004,<b> David Ford </b>established
a reputation as a talented singer, songwriter, guitarist, and pianist.
He then parlayed those skills into a solo career, releasing the debut
album <i><b>I Sincerely Apologise for All the Trouble I've Caused</b></i>
in 2005. After gaining an audience in his native England, Ford traveled
to Texas to play at the 2006 SXSW festival, where a particularly strong
performance led him to a deal with <b>Columbia Records</b>.
Any attempts at modern comparisons don't quite get to the heart of David
Ford. To find his actual peers you have to go back to some of the great
curveball mavericks of melody, romance and inventiveness. Artists such
as <b>Tom Waits, Neil Young, Randy Newman</b> and (early<b>) Elton John,</b> whose memorable melodies are frequently offset by powerful and poignant lyrics. David's new album <i><b>Charge </b></i>was released this April.<br />

For more than twenty years husband and wife duo <b>Over The Rhine</b>
have been crafting evocative, earthy songs and delivering them to their
intensely loyal fans with a torchy, devil-may-care beauty. With <b>Linford Detweiler’s</b> deeply literary songwriting and <b>Karin Bergquist’s </b>unmatched
vocals, the pair have found themselves royalty in an underground world
of artist's artists. Pulling from a heritage of folk, jazz, ragtime, and
classical music, Over The Rhine will draw you in for an evening you'll
never forget. Their new fan-funded record<i><b> The Long Surrender </b></i>on
their own Great Speckled Dog label (named for the couple’s Great Dane,
Elroy), marks 20 years since their 1991 debut. It’s the bountiful result
of a collaboration between the couple and <b>Joe Henry</b>, whose songs they’ve long admired.<br />

<b>Saul Williams </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Saul Williams possesses the theatrical flair of an actor, the
literary arsenal of a Beat poet and the soul of a trip-hop musician.
These talents first came together when he co-wrote and starred in the
1998 movie "Slam," playing a small-time-drug-dealer-turned-slam-poet.
With life imitating art, Williams has carved out a career exploring the
intersection of poetry and music, alternating between publishing books
and releasing LPs that explore themes of inequality and transformation.</span></div>

<br />
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
This
exploration of identity reached its peak when Williams adopted a glam
alter ego for his 2007 album, "The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of
Niggy Tardust," channeling David Bowie. His latest album, "Volcanic
Sunlight," peels back the layers of artifice, beautiful as they were. In
the first few seconds of opening track "Look to the Sun," Williams
declares, "The labels that I claimed as me / were no more than a skin / I
wrapped around my consciousness / as if it had an end." The words roll
off his tongue with precision and speed yet land on the ear with an
inviting ease. "Girls on Saturn" riffs on Cyndi Lauper's pop anthem
"Girls Just Want to Have Fun," and "Explain My Heart" coats
philosophical ruminations in punchy riffs.</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
"Volcanic Sunlight"
marks a musical catharsis for Williams. It may not have the complexity
of his previous works, but some thoughts are best expressed simply.</div>

<b>Ariel Pink and Haunted Graffiti</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<b>Ariel Pink</b>‘s debut on <b>4AD,</b> <i>Before Today</i>,
blew a lot of minds and solidified the musician and his band as
worthwhile purveyors and perverters of popular music’s past. Littered
with melodies and harmonies taken out of various decades and then
covered in a haze of what was known vaguely at the time as “chillwave,”
the album was on plenty of lists as one of the best albums of the year.
So last year, when <i>Mature Themes</i> came out, it was
understandable that people were worried about a possible slump or let
down in momentum. This neurosis might have stopped people from giving
the album its fair due, while not as immediately accessible as <i>Before Today</i>,
it still displays the same pedigree and the same understanding of
innately pleasant melody. One listen to the title track or “Only in
Dreams” should silence any haters. Regardless, the “chillwave” fad looks
like it is on its way to being snuffed out this year, with many artists
associated with the genre (including Ariel Pink, <b>Toro y Moi</b>, <b>Beach Fossils</b>, and <b>Youth Lagoon</b>)
branching out and making music with only a faint residue of the genre
still included. While fans might want to hear songs like “Bright Lit
Blue Skies,” “Can’t Hear My Eyes,” and “Round and Round,” on Saturday June 8th
they should give the new stuff a chance to burrow into their hearts as
well.<br />

<b>Purple Pilgrims </b></div>
<br />
One of the defining features of music in 2013 so far seems to be an
oscillation back to the sounds and features of psychedelia in music.
Perhaps this is a result of the previously mentioned genre of
“chillwave” gaining popularity with druggy, hazy sounds that are
starting to reach into all aspects of music, perhaps it corresponds to a
deep and subconscious need to drown out clarity in emotionally trying
times devoid of any kind of mysticism, or perhaps it is something
completely different. Either way, the sister duo of <b>Clementine</b> and <b>Valentine Nixon</b> are going to bring some droney, noisey stuff to the Wonder Ballroom as <b>Purple Pilgrims</b>.
While the venue is technically non-smoking, I can’t imagine their set
going by without at least one person realizing that things might get a
little interesting with some marijuana involved. This is not to say it
is necessary to enjoy the music, but rather that the music inspires a
certain kind of introspection that is aided by certain herbal
supplements. <br />

<b>Kirin J Callahan </b>is the former guitarist for Mercy
Arms, an Australian indie-rock band that were signed to Capitol Records.
After their breakup, Callahan went solo, releasing his first

that sit somewhere between boozy folklore and catchy noise. The song

exactly that—his voice rough and completely torn up, croaking over
wailing guitar sirens and a skronky, cathartic ending. It’d feel
improvised if it wasn’t so tightly wound. Callinan’s Embracism is out

The death of <b>Bobby Charles,</b> in 2010, touched off a
resurgence of interest in the work of the Louisiana-born
singer-songwriter. The standard obituaries focused mainly on the swamp
pop that Charles pioneered in the late fifties and early sixties; he
wrote <i><b>“See You Later, Alligator,”</b></i> which was recorded by <b>Bill Haley and His Comets, </b>and <i><b>“Walking to New Orleans,”</b></i> which was recorded by<b> Fats Domino.</b>
But longer appreciations also made room for assessments of the gently
biting solo material Charles recorded in the early seventies, which
sounded like<b> Randy Newman fronting the Band. </b>That solo work is at the heart of <b>“Small Town Talk”</b> (Sacred Sumac), a collaboration between the singer <b>Shannon McNally and the pianist Dr. John.</b> <b><a href="http://arenaspromotions.com/blog/shannon-mcnally-small-town-talk/" style="color: #336699; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: underline;" target="_self">Shannon talks about the project in this short video. </a></b><br />

By including no fewer than seven songs from Charles’s eponymous 1972 solo album—which was reissued in a deluxe edition by <b>Rhino Handmade</b>
in 2011—McNally seems like she’s making a case for Charles as one of
the great lost singer-songwriters of the era. She should; he is.
Charles’s greatest asset was his subtlety—his insinuating melodies and
laid-back vocals made him both easy to listen to and hard to fully
digest. The title song, co-written with<b> Rick Danko,</b> of <b>the Band</b>
(who later recorded it), is an indelible portrait of provincial life,
done in loping tempo and with a jaunty whistling solo (here reconceived
as a harmonica part). The funky “Street People” (which celebrates the
social value of laziness, or at the very least the absence of ambition)
and “Save Me Jesus” (which laments greed, war, runaway technology, and
nearly everything else) are just as pointed, and just as charming.
Charles is not new to McNally—she included a winsome cover of <i><b>“Tennessee Blues”</b></i> on her album<b> “Geronimo”</b>
back in 2005—and she wisely handles his songs with a mix of clear,
simple phrasing and a restraint that suggests even deeper reserves of
power. <b>Dr. John </b>and his band,<b> the Lower 911,</b> provide New Orleans funk throughout, especially on rousing renditions of the broken-love tracks <i><b>“Love in the Worst Degree”</b></i> and <i><b>“Long Face,”</b></i> the latter of which includes spoken (and hilarious) interjections by the good doctor. Charles’s loveliest song, the Zen-like <i><b>“I Must Be in a Good Place Now,”</b></i> is saved for last, where it produces both peace and sadness. <a href="http://theadvocate.com/utility/homepagestories/5798766-129/shannon-mcnally-remakes-bobby-charles" style="color: #336699; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: underline;" target="_self">Great Article here in The Advocate.</a><br />

<br />
<b>Tim Eriksen</b>
is acclaimed for transforming American tradition with his startling
interpretations of old ballads, love songs, shape-note gospel and dance
tunes from New England and the Southern Appalachia. He combines
hair-raising vocals with inventive accompaniment on banjo, fiddle,
guitar and bajo sexto - a twelve string Mexican acoustic bass - creating
a distinctive hardcore Americana sound that ranges from the bare bones
of solo unaccompanied singing to the lush, multi-layered arrangements on
his latest album "Josh Billings Voyage" (timeriksenmusic 2012).<br />
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Eriksen's new project <b>The Trio de Pumpkintown</b>
(Tip, Zip and Potter) celebrates the multicultural folksong of a
fictional New England village in fresh, acoustic arrangements. Much of
the Trio's music comes from the 18th and 19th centuries: love songs,
murder ballads, songs of travel on the high seas, rollicking Afro-Celtic
sing-alongs, music of local francophone and Scottish communities and
shape-note harmony including that of 18th century Native American
composer <b>Metacomet Samson</b>. In addition to their
Traditional New England Repertoire, the Trio also plays their own
original music and, occasionally, songs by local P’town bands and music
drawn from their contact with more recent immigrants to the area.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
While The Trio de Pumpkintown’s own compositions have been praised as <i>“strange and original works” </i>(NetRhythmsUK) and <i>“wicked awesome” </i>(The
Pumpkinville Daily Sewer), the band is also devoted to preserving other
local music of the late twentieth and early twenty first centuries, and
their performances sometimes include an acoustic cover version or two
of songs by P’town bands like<b> Weasel Stain</b> (copcore), <b>Crucifer</b> (vegan doom) and <b>Vaginasaur </b>(anarcho-feminist
postpop). Adding to their historical and original repertoire, The Trio
de Pumpkintown sometimes draws on material gathered during the course of
their collaborative research into minority musics in the region.</div>

Pumpkintown has been known regionally as a musical destination for nearly two hundred years, from renowned 19th century singer <b>Josh Billings Sr</b>. (“Black Josh) to the indie rock scene that popped up virtually overnight after an early 70’s gig by <b>The Shaggs</b> at the old meetinghouse. The Trio learned much of its traditional repertoire from their friend <b>Silas Billings III,</b> a font of traditional songs he learned from his great uncle<b> Josh Billings Jr</b>.,
who in turn learned them from his father. Silas, who also has a
longstanding relationship to Sprigfield County’s indie scene, is just
one of several local musicians to have made a guest appearance on the
Trio de Pumpkintown’s pre-debut album <b>Josh Billings Voyage: or Cosmopolite on the Cotton Road. </b>The album is available online at <a data-cke-saved-href="http://timeriksen.bandcamp.com" href="http://timeriksen.bandcamp.com/" style="color: red;" target="_blank">timeriksen.bandcamp.com</a><span style="color: red;">,</span> at<b> A.J. My name is Stephen Kellogg. I’m thirty-six years old. I say that I’m from Northampton, MA because that’s where I got my start, though now I live in Southern Connecticut. I’ve spent the better part of the last ten years on the road or in the studio, but I have four daughters and a beautiful wife too. I asked if I could write my own biography, partially because it saves money, and I figured if someone wanted to learn about me, I’d just as soon tell them myself.<br />
<br />
My music has been described as Americana, Country-Rock, Folk, Singer/Songwriter, and, somehow, pop. I have always thought of it as American-rock n’ roll. It’s a product of my father’s record collection, from Jim Croce and Cat Stevens to Eagles and The Band. Somewhere along the way, I fell in love with showmanship and acts that put on great concerts. Sometimes that meant Van Halen, other times it meant the Grateful Dead, and most recently it’s probably more to do with John Prine. For what it’s worth, Tom Petty is my favorite artist. Although it’s been pointed out to me by one quite popular publication that I’m “no Bruce Springsteen," I’ve decided to continue making music anyway (I’m laughing as I write this in case that’s not clear).<br />
<br />
The thing is…I fell into this job. I like people. I like sharing a world-view. I don’t mind singing and playing guitar, but I never expected that I’d do it for a living. Like a lot of folks, I think I just figured I wasn’t good enough or that maybe it wasn’t possible. The fact remained though that I needed a way to provide for my family, presumably just like those of you reading this biography (or for the younger generations, the same way your parents have). Ultimately writing songs and playing them for people has become that living. There are many occupations for which I have immense admiration - doctors, soldiers and teachers topping the list. But there isn’t another job I think I’d necessarily be suited for, so this is what I do.<br />
<br />
In November of 2012, my band of the last ten years decided to take a hiatus. We performed our final show at Webster Hall in New York City for three hours and said goodbye for now. 2012 also took with it my mother-inlaw and my grandmother. Most of this happened in late Spring, when my house was under renovation; the foundation was still there, but the house was literally ripped apart. Some metaphor, huh? 2012 was a year of change if nothing else. The musical result of this tumultuous period is Blunderstone Rookery. The title comes from the boyhood home of my favorite character in my favorite book, “David Copperfield”. I produced Blunderstone Rookery in conjunction with my long-time musical collaborator, Kit Karlson. Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, Monsters of Folk) mixed the album.<br />
<br />
We chose to make the record in Bridgeport, Connecticut because, after making the last few in Los Angeles and New York, I really wanted to work on home turf. The music was played by a number of friends of mine, some of them play in bands you may have heard of (Travis McNabb and Annie Clements from Sugarland, Sean Watkins from Nickel Creek, Jerry DePizzo from OAR), and many of them, including me, you may not have heard of. I loved working on Blunderstone Rookery more than any album I’ve ever made and it’s my ninth studio effort. It was a fresh process. One that began with the exciting notion, “what if I say exactly what I want to say” and ended with me handing my father a vinyl copy to add to his record collection.<br />
<br />
That, after all, is why I do this. Using words and intention in the hopes of a positive legacy for my family.<br />

</span></div>
<span class="paragraph-0">All of the uncertainty of going independent for the first time
is history for Paula Cole. Her fans’ support helped make her first
do-it-yourself album, “Raven,” a reality. The disc will drop this spring.<br />
<br />
</span>
<span class="paragraph-1">
Cole will preview tracks from the forthcoming project Friday, January 18th at 7PM at the Iron Horse in Northampton flanked by
guitarist Mark Erelli, who's back at the Horse with Antje Duvekot two weeks later on Friday 2/1. Paula is pleased her followers made her latest project a reality.<br />
<br />
</span>
“My fans are tremendous,” Cole says. “I can’t thank them enough. They’ve enabled me to put out more music.”<br />
<br />
“Raven” is reminiscent of her 1994 debut “Harbinger,” which is full of intimate, poignant and bittersweet cuts.<br />
<br />
“There is definitely a connection between the two
albums,” Cole says while calling from her suburban Boston home. “I think
it would be a good idea to play some songs from ‘Harbinger’ on this
tour. They would certainly fit. Of course, I’ll also play the songs
people expect me to play.”<br />
<br />
“Where Have All The Cowboys Gone” and “I Don’t Want
To Wait,” which was the opening theme for the ’90s television series
“Dawson’s Creek,” will be rendered.<br />
<br />
“That song was obviously huge for me,” the
multiple-Grammy winner says. “It bumped me up to this incredible level
that I never imagined. There was the good and bad with that. More people
discovered me, but all that goes along with it didn’t necessarily fit
with my introverted self.”<br />
<br />
The vocalist-pianist is hardly a careerist. Cole did the unthinkable
in 2000, just two years after winning the Grammy for best new artist.
She took a seven-year hiatus to have and raise her daughter Sky.<br />
<br />
“You don’t see that too often these days,” Cole says.
“It’s about getting bigger and bigger for some. I just decided to go
with what’s most important. I don’t regret the decision to be at home
for those years one bit.<br />
<br />
“But I’m back now, and my daughter will miss me cooking breakfast for some mornings, but she understands.<br />
<br />
“This is what I do. I’m a musician, but I’m also a
mother. Life gets complicated, but it’s fine. I’ve made a couple of
decisions a lot of people wouldn’t have made.”<br />
<br />
That includes turning down a deal from a jazz label during the late-’80s in favor going to college.<br />
<br />
“I didn’t want to sing other people’s songs,” she
says. “I wanted to sing my songs. I do what I have to do. I ultimately
make the decisions and I think I’ve made some good ones.”<br />

<b>Livingston Taylor </b>picked
up his first guitar at the age of thirteen, beginning a forty-year
career that has encompassed performance, songwriting and teaching. Born
in Boston and raised in North Carolina, Livingston is the fourth child
in a very musical family that includes <b>Alex, James, Kate and Hugh.</b>
Livingston recorded his first record at 18 and has continued to create
well-crafted, introspective and original songs that have earned him
listeners worldwide. From top-forty hits<i><b> “I Will Be in Love with You</b></i>” and <i><b>“I’ll Come Running,” </b></i>to <i><b>“I Can Dream of You”</b></i> and <i><b>“Boatman” </b></i>both
recorded by his brother James, Livingston’s creative output has
continued unabated. His musical knowledge has inspired a varied
repertoire, and he is equally at home with a range of musical
genres—folk, pop, gospel, jazz—and from upbeat storytelling to touching
ballads. Livingston has never stopped performing since those early
coffeehouse days, touring with major artists such as <b>Linda Ronstadt, Jimmy Buffett </b>and<b> Jethro Tull, </b>and
he maintains a busy concert schedule of over eighty shows a year. He is
a natural performer, peppering his shows with personal stories,
anecdotes and ineffable warmth that connect him to his fans.<br />

now recognized as one of the leading groups in jazz. Charlap is the
artistic director of New York City’s Jazz in July Festival at the 92nd

JVC Jazz Festival and the Hollywood Bowl. A two-time Grammy nominee,
Charlap is married to renowned jazz pianist <b>Renee Rosnes</b>, and the two often collaborate in a duo piano setting. In the spring of 2010, Charlap and Rosnes released<i><b> "Double Portrait"</b></i>, their acclaimed duo piano recording on the <b>Blue Note</b> label.<i>
"Charlap approaches a song the way a lover approaches his
beloved...when he sits down to play, the result is an embrace, an act of
possession. The tune rises, falls, disappears and resurfaces in new
forms as Charlap ranges over the keyboard with nimble, crisply swinging
lines, subtly layered textures, dense chords and spiky interjections.”</i> <b>-TIME </b>Magazine</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b> </b>It hardly seems fair that <b>Cheryl Wheeler</b>
is as funny as she is gifted as a singer and songwriter. Wheeler uses
both to excellent effect, in her songs and especially in concert. If
you’re unfamiliar, listen to her new concert album <i><b>“Greetings: Cheryl Wheeler Live,” </b></i>where she sets up funny songs like<i><b> “Pop Tarts and Spam” </b></i>and <i><b>“Lady Gaga’s Singing Program”</b></i>
with funny stories. She does more than goof around, though: like many
performers with a wry sense of humor, Wheeler also has full command of a
finely honed sense of poignancy that follows laughter with a deep sigh.
It’s a powerful combination. Raised in a Maryland suburb of Washington
D.C., Wheeler moved to Rhode Island in the mid-’70s, so she’s
practically a native New Englander by now. Although she’s been releasing
albums — and good ones, at that — for decades, they represent but a
fraction of her catalog. Wheeler’s music lives mostly on stage, where
she often performs songs that never make it onto albums. In other words,
you’ll never know what you’re missing until you see her perform.</div>

<b>Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi </b>is arguably the most powerful creative force to emerge from<b> Zimbabwe </b>in the last three decades. Carefully balancing compelling rhythms and accessible melodies with insightful lyrics, <b>Tuku</b>
has built a vast body of work that is politically and socially
relevant, yet entertaining and accessible to a worldwide audience.
Throughout a career that spans more than 45 recordings and <span class="text_exposed_show">virtually every corner of the globe, he has remained committed to the live music scene of his homeland, where he and his band, <b>The Black Spirits</b>,
continually play to enthusiastic audiences in even the most remote

<br /><strong>The Salvation Alley String Band </strong>plays
original music influenced by honky-tonk, western swing, Bakersfield
country, bluegrass, and rock and roll. Following the release of their
2010 album <em>T<strong>he Pioneer Valley Rose and Other Favorites</strong></em>,
audiences began falling in love with "Sal Al’s" catchy songs, guy/girl
harmonies, pedal steel guitar, mandolin, and twangy guitars. Shucks,
they even opened for Country Music legend <strong>George Jones</strong> at the Calvin Theatre this year to clearly favorable audience response. Hoots <em>and</em> hollers were heard. The band is releasing their self-produced second album, <strong><em>The Salvation Alley String Band presents The Space Wandere</em>r </strong>on the local <strong>Rub Wrongways Records</strong>
label tomorrow, Tuesday. November 13th and will celebrate the release
with a show at the Iron Horse this Sunday, November 18th at 7PM along
with <strong>The Beatroot Band </strong>and <strong>Joe Fletcher and the Wrong Reasons</strong>.<em> </em>The album cover, in the Country & Western tradition, features a truck driving dinosaur (Triceratops?) on the cover. <b>Tickets are $10 at Northampton Box Office, 76 Main Street, 413 586 8686 and online at</b><a data-cke-saved-href="http://iheg.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1d5bdea27fe9bba39adff43c2&id=1f874120a7&e=5cb9032c08" href="http://iheg.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1d5bdea27fe9bba39adff43c2&id=1f874120a7&e=5cb9032c08" style="color: #336699; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"> IHEG.com.</a><br /><br /><a data-cke-saved-href="http://www.salvationalleystringband.com/" href="http://www.salvationalleystringband.com/" target="_blank">Band website.</a><br /><br /><a data-cke-saved-href="https://www.facebook.com/salvationalley" href="https://www.facebook.com/salvationalley" target="_blank">Band Facebook</a>Jim Neillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00246481156712611536noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1014623858118214836.post-75969942630520182222012-11-14T12:02:00.001-05:002012-11-14T12:02:37.259-05:00Jake Shimabukuro makes the leap from the Iron Horse to the Calvin Theatre for his next Northampton show, Saturday, December 1st at 8PM. New album produced by legendary Alan Parsons. <div style="text-align: center;">

<i>“Jake is taking the instrument to a place that I can’t see anybody else catching up with.” - Eddie Vedder</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
In his young career, ukulele wizard<strong> Jake Shimabukuro</strong> has already redefined a heretofore under-the-radar instrument, been declared a musical “hero” by <i>Rolling Stone</i>, won accolades from the disparate likes of <strong>Eddie Vedder, Perez Hilton and Dr. Sanjay Gupta</strong>, wowed audiences on TV <strong>(Jimmy Kimmel, Conan),</strong> earned comparisons to <strong>Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis, </strong>and even played in front of the <strong>Queen of England.</strong><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a data-cke-saved-href="http://images.jakeshimabukuro.com/uploads/album_art/105_3.jpg" href="http://images.jakeshimabukuro.com/uploads/album_art/105_3.jpg" target="_blank"><img align="none" data-cke-saved-src="https://d2q0qd5iz04n9u.cloudfront.net/_ssl/proxy.php/http/gallery.mailchimp.com/1d5bdea27fe9bba39adff43c2/images/images_jakeshimabukuro_com_uploads_album_art_105_430x0.jpg" height="266" src="https://d2q0qd5iz04n9u.cloudfront.net/_ssl/proxy.php/http/gallery.mailchimp.com/1d5bdea27fe9bba39adff43c2/images/images_jakeshimabukuro_com_uploads_album_art_105_430x0.jpg" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
With his new record <strong><i>Grand Ukulele</i></strong>, Shimabukuro’s star may burn even brighter.<br />
An ambitious follow-up to 2011’s <strong><i>Peace, Love, Ukulele</i> </strong>(which
debuted at #1 on the Billboard World Charts), the Hawaiian musician’s
new record finds him collaborating with legendary producer/engineer <strong>Alan Parsons,</strong> best known for his work on <strong>Pink Floyd’s <i>Dark Side of the Moon</i>, The Beatles’ <i>Abbey Road</i></strong> and his own highly successful solo project. <em>“It was very organic how it happened,” </em>says Shimabukuro (she-ma-boo-koo-row). <em>“He
attended a couple of my shows near where he lives in Santa Barbara and
the concert promoter put us in touch. I was stunned. I mean, THE Alan
Parsons? We ended up having dinner before the show and he casually
mentioned the idea of possibly working together on a project. It was a
priceless opportunity I didn’t want to pass up – he’s a genius.”</em><br />
<br />
Parsons
ended up helping Shimabukuro expand his sound, bringing in a 29-piece
orchestra and a big-name rhythm section, including drummer <strong>Simon Phillips (The Who, Toto), </strong>session superstar bassist <strong>Randy Tico and Kip Winger (Winger, Alice Cooper),</strong> who helped with the orchestration.<br />
<em>“The best thing was that, even with all those people, we recorded everything live with no overdubs,”</em> says Shimabukuro. <em>“It
was great, tracking live with an orchestra and a rhythm section. We
picked up on each other’s subtle emotional cues – you could feel
everyone breathing together. It was like the old days of recording –
when everyone tracked together – there’s a certain magic that happens.”</em><br />

<span style="font-size: 24px;"><b></b></span><img align="none" data-cke-saved-src="https://d2q0qd5iz04n9u.cloudfront.net/_ssl/proxy.php/http/gallery.mailchimp.com/1d5bdea27fe9bba39adff43c2/images/DSO_poster.jpg" height="640" src="https://d2q0qd5iz04n9u.cloudfront.net/_ssl/proxy.php/http/gallery.mailchimp.com/1d5bdea27fe9bba39adff43c2/images/DSO_poster.jpg" style="height: 640px; width: 422px;" width="422" /></div>
<b>The Dark Star Orchestra</b> has been performing <b>Grateful Dead</b> shows live since 1997, just two years and change after the passage to a higher place of <b>Jerry Garcia.</b>
For earlier generations of Deadheads they offer a chance to revisit
some long strange trips and for latter day fans it's the closest thing
to a time machine back to a concert experience that is hard to come by
any more. Using entire shows from the <b>Grateful Dead’s</b> decades of touring as a launching pad, <b>Dark Star Orchestra</b>
recreates song for song performances straight from historic set lists.
Not merely mimicking the Dead, DSO instead seeks the individual style of
each era and offers its own interpretations and improvisations for a
group famed and loved for their interpretations and improvisations.
Having toured worldwide to the tune of over 2000 shows, Dark Star
Orchestra’s determined commitment to ‘raising the Dead’ has drawn them
much critical acclaim.<i>"The most talented and accomplished tribute band out there. Fanatical attention to detail." </i>– Rolling Stone<br />
<br />
<i>“As close as you’ll get to the Grateful Dead.”</i> – New Times Newspapers<br />
<br />
<i>“One of the most durable and ingenious cover bands out there.” </i>– St. Paul Pioneer Press<br />
<br />
Five original members of the Grateful Dead have played alongside DSO onstage. <i>“Playing with Dark Star Orchestra is something that feels just exactly like it felt when I was playing with the Grateful Dead.” </i>– Donna Jean Godchaux, Grateful Dead vocalist, frequent DSO guest<br />

<br />
</div>
Comprised
of Jeff Mattson (lead guitar/vocals), Lisa Mackey (vocals), Dino
English (drums), Rob Koritz (drums), Kevin Rosen (bass), Rob Eaton
(rhythm guitar/vocals) and Rob Barraco (keyboards), Dark Star Orchestra
does not try to match Grateful Dead live songs note for note. Anything
more formulaic would quickly dispel the free spirit embodied in the
music. Precision is king with DSO, which position the stage plot based
on the year of Grateful Dead show to be performed, adapting phrasing,
voice arrangements, and even arranges specific musical equipment for the
various eras of Dead music performed. At the end of every performance,
the band announces the date and venue where the original show just
covered took place. Dark Star Orchestra dips into every incarnation of
the Dead, so most fans can “see” shows that happened long before they
were born. Dark Star Orchestra isn’t a cover band. Its shows are not
even meant as tributes. What Dark Star Orchestra achieves is a
continuation of the spirit of what has now become over forty years of
the Grateful Dead’s timeless music.<br />

<div>
<span style="font-size: 14px;"><span style="letter-spacing: -0.05pt;"><b>Roomful of Blues,</b> according to <b><i>DownBeat</i> </b>magazine, “<i>are in a class by themselves.”</i> With their masterful combination of jumping, horn-heavy, hard-edged blues and R&B, it’s no wonder why the great C<b>ount Basie </b>called them <i>“the hottest blues band I’ve ever heard.” </i>Since 1967, the group’s deeply rooted blend of swing, rock ‘n’ roll, jump, blues and soul has earned it five <b>Grammy Award</b> nominations and a slew of other accolades. The band has been led since 1996 by guitarist<b> Chris Vachon</b>. <i><b>Guitar Player</b></i> says, <i>“Vachon burns with explosive solos and a delightfully greasy sense of rhythm.”</i>
Roomful of Blues has always maintained its signature sound by boasting
great musicianship and a stellar horn section—featuring tenor and alto
saxophonist<b> Rich Lataille</b>, who first joined the band in
1970. Lataille’s masterful playing can evoke either the fat-toned
honking sax of the glory days of early rock or the cool elegance of big
band swing jazz. <b><i>The Chicago Sun-Times</i> </b>said, “<i>This
is a band on top of its game, sliding easily from big-band jazz-blues
to guitar-drenched urban blues...let the party begin.”</i> Their latest album <b><i><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Hook, Line & Sinker</span></i> </b>packs </span>a dozen hand-picked songs from <b>Little Richard, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Amoz Milburn, Floyd Dixon </b>and more, all given the swinging, stinging Roomful treatment. <i>"Marvelous wall-to-wall grooves, wicked guitar work and brassy horns...things never stop swinging." <b>USA Today</b></i></span></div>

<strong>Dinosaur Jr.</strong>
is now widely recognized as one of the most significant American rock
bands of all time; the sound they pioneered in the late-80s having
permeated through the past 20 years. Preceding Nirvana by several years,
they were instrumental in bringing the crashing sounds of lead guitar
back to indie rock. It wasn't just their signature metallic haze that
made an impression on listeners; their effects-laden guitars were
wrapped around some of the best songwriting of the decade. The first
three albums --<em><strong> Dinosaur, You're Living All Over Me</strong></em> and <em><strong>Bug</strong></em> -- were cult masterpieces and when the original line up of <strong>Mascis, Barlow </strong>and drummer <strong>Murph</strong>
re-formed in 2005 for select live dates it was apparent that the years
apart had not eroded any of their vitality. In fact, many critics
claimed their shows were even better than they used to be. It was
natural, then, that the band would begin to work on new material.<br />
<br />

If you were a <strong><a data-cke-saved-href="http://www.dinosaurjr.com/" href="http://www.dinosaurjr.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Dinosaur Jr.</a> </strong>fan
the first time around, it still seems amazing, three albums into their
fantastic post-2005 reunion run, that they're together at all. At this
point, though, the stories about bickering and drama aren't as
interesting as the fact that the new albums-- 2007's <strong><a data-cke-saved-href="http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/10127-beyond/" href="http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/10127-beyond/" target="_blank"><i>Beyond</i></a>,</strong> 2009's <strong><a data-cke-saved-href="http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/13109-farm/" href="http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/13109-farm/" target="_blank"><i>Farm</i></a>,</strong> and now <strong><i>I Bet on Sky</i></strong>--
are all essential Dinosaur Jr. It takes a certain kind of group to
reunite and create vital music and J, Lou, and Murph are up to the task.
This is the sound of one of America's greatest living rock bands
hitting their stride.<br /><br />Opening the show is <strong>Ecstatic Peace's</strong> <a data-cke-saved-href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Hush-Arbors/86325149710" href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Hush-Arbors/86325149710" target="_blank"><strong>Hush Arbors</strong></a>, whose<strong> Keith Wood </strong>has played with <strong>Six Organs of Admittance, Sunburned Hand of the Man, Current 93, </strong>and <strong>Thurston Moore. </strong><br /><br /><b>Tickets are $25 at Northampton Box Office, 76 Main Street, 413 586 8686 and online a</b><strong>t</strong><a data-cke-saved-href="http://iheg.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1d5bdea27fe9bba39adff43c2&id=1f874120a7&e=5cb9032c08" href="http://iheg.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1d5bdea27fe9bba39adff43c2&id=1f874120a7&e=5cb9032c08" style="color: #336699; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><strong> IHEG.com.</strong></a> <strong>Showtime is 8PM.<br /><br />A portion of the proceeds from the show will benefit <a data-cke-saved-href="http://www.commonschool.org/about/about.html" href="http://www.commonschool.org/about/about.html" target="_blank">The Common School in Amherst. <img align="none" data-cke-saved-src="https://d2q0qd5iz04n9u.cloudfront.net/_ssl/proxy.php/http/gallery.mailchimp.com/1d5bdea27fe9bba39adff43c2/images/children.gif" height="21" src="https://d2q0qd5iz04n9u.cloudfront.net/_ssl/proxy.php/http/gallery.mailchimp.com/1d5bdea27fe9bba39adff43c2/images/children.gif" style="height: 21px; width: 56px;" width="56" /></a></strong><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;"><a href="http://richardjamesband.com/" target="_blank">Richard James & The Name Changers</a> hail from the north shore of Boston, Massachusetts. The band released their sophomore record on September 8th, 2012 at The Port City Music Hall in Portland Maine after successfully performing at two of Boston's best showcases at the SXSW Music Festival in Austin. They head to California in January 2013 for their first West Coast tour. <br /><br />
"Every show is its own life force, with a diverse and carefully crafted batch of originals endlessly flowing through witty cover selections (much like that band that changed the name of that animal</span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
</span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;">
that swims in the sea). It’s a jam band in certain places, but a psychedelic, funk-laden rock experience all around the edges. No two shows are alike for this band. What evolved out of a drum and keys duo much like the real Duo (Benevento/Russo) gained steam by adding more arms and legs. The current six-strong grouping, complete with a pair of horns, is locked and loaded with a deep bag of tricks—Zappa, Floyd, and even touches of the Ben Folds Five get their moments. There’s a lot of room to run in this group." <b>- My Secret Boston</b></span><br />

"Richard James is a Brilliant up and coming songwriter! The cynical
lyrics over the eerily fun and flapper-inspired melodies is a hallmark of Richard James’ style." -<b> Ourstage.com</b></span><b><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
</span></b><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;"><br /><br />
"They wear their Beatles influence on their sleeve, from the overall McCartney vibe to the more obvious La La's in the song, "I Tried". I like the sound here, it's nice and clean without being clinical, the band sounds solid! The vocals have a nice natural sound to them, as do the backgrounds. You make it all sound very easy, which is a good thing, especially because we both know it's not..."<b> - Taxi</b></span><b><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
</span></b><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;"><b><br /></b><br />
"The second band to take the stage was the memorable psychedelic indie rock band Richard James. With an ever-growing fan base, Richard James has been helping Boston release that crazy side of them during their shows. Hosting exhilarating and vibrant performances, these musicians</span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
</span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;">
execute more than the average show. With a kickin’ brass section, badass guitarists, playful piano harmonies and dynamic vocals, the soul of this music seeps into its listeners and makes them groove to the energy of the music and the band. The trumpet and trombone capture the spirit of a standard ensemble and replacing it with brass ecstasy.<br /><br />
Richard James is an entrancing voice to watch, and clearly a leader of high caliber on stage. Every song emanates rich tone and lyrical freedom. As Richard James sings his voice adds a harmonic and rhythmic
level to each song; his music is technically and blissfully pleasing
to the ear. With the entire band adding funk, soul rhythms and free
improv; the band unleashes a vital energy that pushes their music to
the edge and then snaps their listeners into a swinging groove. <b> -

</span></b><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;"><b><br /></b><br />
"Richard is classically trained but has chosen to go a more bluesy
route with their music as the head songwriter. They get experimental with the rock 'n' roll format by drawing influences from Herbie</span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
</span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;">
Hancock, Elton John and King Crimson. The guys had a blazing set.
Truckloads of energy and bucket loads of action.<br /><br />
These guys have a lot of scrap to them, and not just in their beard. Mixed with all sorts influences like a whole barrel of blues, a peppering of jazz, a smack of funk, and waterfalls of sweat. Shaking</span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
</span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;">
Richard's giant mitt of a hand was like taking a steam bath...
toweless... but the kind that builds male comradery. He could have
used James Brown's wingmen to escort him off. The spirit they put into the performance was potent. I got a brief contact high, case of the
dizzies and some hot flashes. Richard, a bear of a guy (no homo), was
stomping on the ground while literally shaking the floor as he was
striking the keys. I would have been cool with ending the set in a
pile of rubble. When each instrument took control during a solo there
was a real improvised vitality to it, but the song sections themselves
were meticulously arranged. It also thrived on catchy vocal lines to
keep the listeners coming back for more.<br /><br />
As I was interviewing the guys, I asked the age old question, "So, if
you could pigeonhole yourselves into a really confining stylistic box,
would it be Pop, Rock or Ernie and the Automatics?" I even may have
mentioned that I heard an undercurrent of Phish (pun sadly intended)
in there by calling them, *gasp*, a jam band... I am such an amateur.
Why must I make myself a glutton for all bands to punish? It actually
resulted into an engaging discussion about the sensitivity over
artists labeling themselves into a particular genre and the stigma</span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
</span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;">
behind the term "jam band." I always ask what style a band identifies
with but I welcome the unexpected directions the conversation may lead. Jam band just makes a group seem generic, copycat and wicked
lame. These guys have way more "je ne sais quoi." I will give myself a
deep laceration anytime I think of Trey Anastacio to repent for my
sin. I think Rick described it best by saying, "It's not the band's
job to determine a genre, it's the public's opinion." He's probably
right but it's so much easier to just ask and receive tolerable verbal
abuse (and lacerations).<br /><br />
So.... We arrived at Sheep Rock because who is offended by sheep? And the guys kind of look like sheep." - <b>UNregular Radio</b></span><br />

<span class="descriptionspan" id="2463026c63075descriptionspan">Janis
Martin was one of the few female recording artists working in the
male-dominated rockabilly field in the 1950s. Nicknamed “the female
Elvis” for her dance moves, the Sutherland, Va. native, born in 1940,
recorded a number of singles for RCA Victor and Pallette from 1956 to
’61. Her first single, “Will You Willyum” b/w “Drugstore Rock ’n’ Roll,”
sold more than 750,000 copies, landing her national TV appearances. In
1960, her first husband demanded she leave music. But she returned in
the ’70s, and in 1995 made a guest appearance on Rosie Flores’
"Rockabilly Filly" album. <br /><br />It’s here that the saga of Janis
Martin’s farewell album, "The Blanco Sessions", began. The Blanco
Sessions, produced by Flores and Bobby Trimble, will be released on Cow
Island Music on September 18, 2012.<br /><br />In 2006, Flores left Los
Angeles to return to Austin and found Trimble, an old friend from Big
Sandy’s Fly-Rite Boys, living there too. Trimble found a stellar and
amazing team of Austin musicians to back Martin up including Dave Biller
(guitar), Beau Sample (bass), T-Jarod Bonta (piano) and Trimble on
drum. Kelly Willis also sings a beautiful duet with Janis. And in April
2007, the whole band, Janis, and her husband Wayne, drove from Austin to
Blanco, Texas where the sessions took place. They cut eleven songs in
only two days. <br /><br />Martin left the Blanco Sessions feeling that she
had accomplished something really great, as she told Flores in a phone
call that brought tears of joy to Flores’ eyes. But just a few weeks
later, Flores received another call from her with the shocking news that
she had been diagnosed with stage-four lung cancer. Martin passed away
just four months later.</span><br />

woman into the Danville Museum of Fine Arts & History in her
hometown of Danville, Virginia. In 2010, she was recognized by the
Library of Virginia at its Virginia Women in History Celebration. She
was also featured in the Beth Harrington-directed documentary Welcome to
the Club — The Women of Rockabilly that was broadcast on PBS. <br /><br />Flores

listeners out there who love your voice, your spirit, your heart, and
your rock ’n’ roll soul.”</span><br />

In addition to Janis Martin’s The Blanco Sessions, Rosie’s
newest album, Working Girl's Guitar, will be released on Bloodshot
Records. From her original composition of “Surf Demon #5” to George
Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” these tracks feature Flores
as the only guitarist - a first for Rosie and a long-awaited, stellar
performance by Rosie on the lead guitar. The set was recorded in
Minneapolis with the help of drummer and bassist of Brian Setzer, Noah
Levy and Tommy Vee and finished in Austin, Texas — the home of Rosie
Flores. Flores will bring The Blanco Sessions alive with a U.S. tour
over the months of October and December, during which she and guest
Marti Brom will perform music from the album, Blanco Sessions as well as
classics from Martin’s storied career. Rosie Flores will also perform a
set of music from Working Girls Guitar and her catalogue.<br />

Seven
guys, seven different musical backgrounds, seven different
personalities, one band, one unique and unmistakable voice. Formed four
years ago in New Jersey as an ad hoc group intended to put out one album
and disappear, one thing lead to another and within a few months of
their debut release,<em> Everything Goes Numb,</em><strong> Streetlight Manifesto</strong>
were officially a full time touring band, traveling the world,
spreading their infectious and energetic tunes to all who would listen.
One part rock, one part ska, with influences from latin, klezmer, folk,
world, funk, jazz and classical thrown in, the band redefined what most
people expected from a "ska" band. Three albums later, and after
countless worldwide tours, the guys are still at it, still performing
live to sold out shows filled with sweat drenched fans, all dancing and
singing along at the top of their lungs. And the Streetlight boys
wouldn't have it any other way. Lionize and the Chicarones open the
show.<br /><div style="text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: 18px;"><strong>Indie super-group Divine Fits, much more than the sum of Spoon, Wolf Parade, and </strong><strong>New Bomb Turks, play Friday October 19th at 9pm in the Pearl Street Clubroom</strong></span><br /></div>

<strong>Divine Fits </strong>is a super-trio comprised of <strong>Spoon's Britt Daniel, Wolf Parade's Dan Boeckner and Sam Brown of</strong><strong> New Bomb Turks.</strong> OF COURSE there are echoes of what these guys have done before. The band's insanely acclaimed debut album, <strong>A Thing Called Divine Fits </strong><em>(Merge</em>)
crackles with the sort of daring and electricity few of their
contemporaries can muster. There's tremendous songcraft to spare on the
second single<em> "Would That Not Be Nice."</em> The tour that brings
them to Northampton follows a series of debut shows in the band members'
hometowns of Austin, Montreal and Columbus OH that drew unanimous
raves, as did a series of one-offs and festival appearances, a Los
Angeles residency and a triumphant network TV debut on <strong>LATE NIGHT WITH JIMMY FALLON.</strong><br /><br /><a data-cke-saved-href="http://vimeo.com/50726625" href="http://vimeo.com/50726625" target="_blank">Video for "Would That Not Be Nice." </a><br /><br /><b>Tickets are on sale now at Northampton Box Office, 76 Main Street, 413 586 8686 and online at</b><a data-cke-saved-href="http://iheg.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1d5bdea27fe9bba39adff43c2&id=1f874120a7&e=5cb9032c08" href="http://iheg.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1d5bdea27fe9bba39adff43c2&id=1f874120a7&e=5cb9032c08" style="color: #336699; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"> IHEG.com.</a>Jim Neillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00246481156712611536noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1014623858118214836.post-17413152439864186192012-10-05T16:53:00.002-04:002012-10-05T16:53:07.659-04:00Acoustic Guitar Legend Leo Kottke plays two nights at the Iron Horse Thursday and Friday, October 18th and 19th<div style="text-align: center;">

<span class="reverse">Acoustic guitarist <strong>Leo Kottke </strong>was born in <strong>Athens, Georgia</strong>,
but left town after a year and a half. Raised in 12 different states,
he absorbed a variety of musical influences as a child, flirting with
both violin and trombone, before abandoning <strong>Stravinsky</strong> for the guitar at age 11. After adding a love for the country-blues of <strong>Mississippi John Hurt </strong>to the music of <strong>John Phillip Sousa</strong> and<strong> Preston Epps</strong>,
Kottke joined the Navy underage, to be underwater, and eventually lost
some hearing shooting at lightbulbs in the Atlantic while serving on the
<strong>USS Halfbeak,</strong> a diesel submarine. Kottke had previously entered college at the <strong>U of Missouri,</strong>
dropping out after a year to hitchhike across the country to South
Carolina, then to New London and into the Navy, with his twelve string. <em>"The trip was not something I enjoyed," </em>he has said, "<em>I was broke and met too many interesting people."</em></span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;">

</div>
<span class="reverse">Discharged in 1964, he settled in the Twin Cities area and became a fixture at <strong>Minneapolis' Scholar Coffeehouse</strong>, which had been home to <strong>Bob Dylan </strong>and <strong>John Koerner</strong>. He issued his 1968 recording debut LP <strong>Twelve String Blues</strong>, recorded on a Viking quarter-inch tape recorder, for the Scholar's tiny <strong>Oblivion</strong> label. (The label released one other LP by T<strong>he Langston Hughes Memorial Eclectic Jazz Band</strong>.) After sending tapes to guitarist <strong>John Fahey,</strong> Kottke was signed to Fahey's <strong>Takoma</strong> label, releasing what has come to be called the<strong> Armadillo</strong> record. Fahey and his manager <strong>Denny Bruce</strong> soon secured a production deal for Kottke with<strong> Capitol Records.</strong> Kottke's 1971 major-label debut, <strong>"Mudlark,"</strong>
positioned him somewhat uneasily in the singer/songwriter vein, despite
his own wishes to remain an instrumental performer. Still, despite
arguments with label heads as well as with Bruce, Kottke flourished
during his tenure on Capitol, as records like 1972's <strong>"Greenhouse"</strong> and 1973's live <strong>"My Feet Are Smiling" </strong>and <strong>"Ice Water" </strong>found him branching out with guest musicians and honing his guitar technique. His collaboration with <strong>Phish bassist Mike Gordon, "Clone,"</strong> caught audiences' attention in 2002. Kottke and Gordon followed with a recording in the Bahamas called <strong>"Sixty Six Steps,</strong>" produced by Leo's old friend and <strong>Prince </strong>producer <strong>David Z.</strong><br /><br />Kottke has been awarded two <strong>Grammy</strong> nominations; a Doctorate in Music Performance by the Peck School of Music at the U of Wisconsin, Milwaukee; and a <strong>Certificate of Significant Achievement in Not Playing the Trombone</strong> from the U of Texas at Brownsville with Texas Southmost College. </span><br /><br /><b>Tickets are $30 at Northampton Box Office, 76 Main Street, 413 586 8686 and online at</b><a data-cke-saved-href="http://iheg.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1d5bdea27fe9bba39adff43c2&id=1f874120a7&e=5cb9032c08" href="http://iheg.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1d5bdea27fe9bba39adff43c2&id=1f874120a7&e=5cb9032c08" style="color: #336699; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"> IHEG.com.</a>Jim Neillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00246481156712611536noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1014623858118214836.post-56664808015582869772012-10-05T16:10:00.003-04:002012-10-05T16:11:17.424-04:00Calvin Comedy Series presents three consecutive weekends of wit and wisdom <div style="text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: 18px;"><b> </b></span>With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, master of satire <b>David Sedaris</b>
slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness as one of
the most observant writers addressing the human condition today. He is
the author <b>Barrel Fever</b> and <b>Holidays on Ice</b>, as well as collections of personal essays, <b>Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, </b>and<b> When You Are Engulfed in Flames,</b>
all bestsellers. There are a total of seven million copies of his books
in print and they have been translated into 25 languages. Sedaris’s
pieces appear regularly in<b> The New Yorker</b> and his original radio pieces can often be heard on <b>This American Life. </b>As
funny and moving as his writing is, there is really nothing quite like
seeing and hearing Sedaris read in his own voice. Mr. Sedaris will be

Two-time <b>Grammy Award</b> winner and <b>New York Times</b> best seller <b>Lewis Black </b>has
a lot to say and he doesn’t hold back with his signature comedic rants
about pretty much anything that vexes him to the core. Mr. Black, who
began performing on “The Daily Show” when Craig Kilborn was the host,
channeled the middle-class outrage that has long been a focus of
American politics. For Mr. Black, whose Broadway show “Running on Empty”
begins Oct. 9 in New York City and comes to Northampton's Calvin
Theatre on Friday, October 26th, anger is not just an emotion. It has a
rhythm, an attitude and, of course, a volume.A flagging economy, the
2012 presidential election and a convoluted health care system. And
that’s just a pinch of what you’ll get in one of Black’s
emotionally-charged tirades that often leave him voiceless.<br />

<b>Daily Show <i>Resident Expert </i>John Hodgman</b>
will explain and illustrate most every subject you can imagine,
including: how to enjoy fine wine, how to commit the perfect crime, how
to make money and find happiness as a deranged millionaire, the coming
global superpocalypse known as RAGNAROK, and also, if pressed SPORTS.
There will also be some ukulele playing. People who may be pregnant
and/or prone to seizures please note: JOHN HODGMAN will be performing
without shoes or socks.<b> “That Is All”</b> is the name of
the show but is also the third and final book in a trilogy by John
Hodgman which details a bizarre and insanely detailed world. . After the
first two books established this vivid and realized world, “That Is
All” looks at the collapse and apocalyptic end of the world. It’s
hilarious, detailed and rich. At the end of all this silly anarchy,
Hodgman forges a fairly profound reflection. We knew Hodgman was a
brilliant comedian. “That Is All” shows us something more: he’s a
remarkably talented author who can write some shockingly effecting
prose.<br />

<b>Jonathan Coulton</b></div>
Opening the evening,<b> Jonathan Coulton</b>
has created a self-sustaining universe of songs and fans that would
never have been possible in the pre-internet era. In 2005 Jonathan
Coulton dropped out of a perfectly good software career to write music
on the internet. He embarked upon a bold experiment called Thing a Week,
in which he home-recorded and released a new song every week for an
entire year, giving them all away for free. Even he thought he was
crazy. But while a struggling music industry fell to pieces over
filesharing and shifting business models, Jonathan Coulton quietly and
independently amassed a small army of techies, nerds, and dedicated
superfans who buy his music even though they don't have to. Seeing your
first Coulton show is like walking into an insider club meeting, but one
that gleefully welcomes and indoctrinates you in short order.<b></b><br />
