Mates of State launch“Summer Crushes” Tour at the Iron Horse on June 15th, the same day "Crushes: The Covers Mixtape" is released

Mates of State launch their Summer Crushes Tour at the Iron Horse with Philly electro popsters Free Energy (who appeared on David Letterman this March) and alt-comedy king Todd Barry (Flight of the Conchords). This unpredictable assemblage of talent will also include sideshow performers, sword swallowing, bed-of-nails, straitjacket escapes jugglers, magicians, and someone who goes by the promising-sounding name of Bubble Man. This surreal roadshow gets the latter part of its name from Crushes (The Covers Mixtape), the Mates’ first self-produced album. As its subtitle implies, it finds the band offering up a collection of cool cover tunes. They tackle songs by some of their musical heroes ie. Nick Cave,Daniel Johnston, Death Cab For Cutie, and Belle and Sebastian among others.

The self-released, digital-only album, comes out the day of the Iron Horse show and will be available at the gig as a limited-edition physical CD just in case the sword swallowers and bed of nails weren’t incentive enough for you.

"We're trying to make dance music – fun party rock," said Free Energy guitarist Scott Wells in an interview with Paste Magazine. "Stuff that’s unabashedly going for it, with a good beat, good groove and hopefully a catchy hook." One listen to their debut release, "Stuck On Nothing," will have you convinced: Free Energy certainly accomplishes what they set out to do. Hailing from Philadelphia, Pa., the five-piece outfit gives listeners an upbeat pop-rock sound that's good, clean fun – Free Energy possesses a completely unpretentious quality extremely refreshing to find in today's music scene. The band has been picking up quite a bit of fan momentum after appearing on David Letterman in March, airing video spots on Fuel TV and signing a deal to perform at this summer's Pitchfork Music Festival.

You may have seen Todd as Mickey Rourke's no-so-nice boss in The Wrestler; as the annoying bongo player on Flight of the Conchords; or in roles on Sex And the City, The Larry Sanders Show, Chappelle's Show, Sarah Silverman, Pootie Tang, and Road Trip. He's performed on Letterman, Conan, and in two of his own Comedy Central Presents specials. You can hear his voice on many cartoons, including Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Home Movies, Squidbillies, Hey Monie, Freak Show, and Lucy, The Daughter of the Devil.
