Pop guru and go-to songwriter Marshall Crenshaw plays the Iron Horse on Friday 3/21 at 7PM.

Marshall Crenshaw is one of rock music’s most underappreciated artists with a string of critically acclaimed albums (beginning with his self-titled 1982 debut, right through 2003’s What’s in the Bag?, and a good bit of work in other media (books, films and more). So what does a pop legend do to pass the time? Well, how about write the theme song to the new Judd Apatow (40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Superbad) film Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.

"Most of my records are pretty good. Some of them aren’t, but most of them are.”

The man knows how life and love fit inside a pop song, and the setlist at the Iron Horse on Friday will be full of the usual beauties. Last time through he did a little MC5 as well as the Rolling Stone’s 19th Nervous Breakdown.

“My influences are people like Buddy Holly, Bill Frisell, guys with glasses!

Other Crenshaw facts to impress your friends and verify their suspicions of your nerdiosity:

  1. Marshall played Buddy Holly in the film La Bamba.
  2. He was John Lennon in the Broadway cast of Beatlemania! (pic below!)
  3. He wrote the theme song to TV’s Men Behaving Badly, though an absolute gentleman himself.
  4. He wrote the Gin Blossoms hit “Until I Hear it From You.”
