No Ruckus Left Unraised at Carolina Chocolate Drops show last Thursday at the Iron Horse

Two crowds kept a tenuous peace during the CCD show Thursday: the flailing gaggle of granola girls jumping and yelping to our little primal heart's content wherever two square feet of floor could be found vs. the seated, reverent fans enjoying dinner and a show. Angry sighs and judging glances were exchanged but the show barrelled on. Many of us have a hard time understanding music when we can't move; other people have a hard time listening in the presence of a near riot. CCD have obviously balanced the tension between their two audiences before. Between song banter was comprised of ethnomusicological factoids, but the music also spoke perfectly well for itself and flowed through the kind of energy changes a dancing crowd needs, letting us rest but never letting us disengage.

Thursday's waitstaff are owed an apology, certainly. We made their job harder than it should have been. We all got what we needed, and if most of us keep coming back, I'm sure we'll get better at respecting each other's experiences.

It bears mentioning that Avi and Celia were the perfect bluesy teaser. I trust we will see more of them. -Monika

(It was a seated show, as are most of our 7PM dinner shows, but having now seen the Chocolate Drops completely delight and excite the full house, when we bring them back, as we undoubtedly will, we'll try to address the dance factor or do a 2nd open floor late show or something. Or we may use stealth sedative darts on you crazies. Don't quote me on any of this. I'm a publicist, not the Iron Horse manager. -Ed.)
